The dates have been confirmed for the 2016 South American C Championship. This year’s edition will be played over three rounds from December 4-10 in Guatemala.
In 2015 El Salvador hosted the tournament. Coming out on top was Guatemala. The Central Americans then went on to face Ecuador in a South American B repechage play-off. In a demonstration of the progression of rugby in Central and South America the result was secured by just a single point.
In having done so well in 2015 and against Ecuador the Guatemalans will enter as favorites. They are to be up against Costa Rica, El Salvador and Panama. The four countries will play three matches each, with games taking place on December 04, 07 and 10.
Also taking place will be a women’s 7’s competition on Friday December 09. Also on that day will be an under 23 match.
The fixtures are yet to be finalized. For the time being the dates and venues have been set. The matches are to be staged at the Estadio Nacional de Guatemala Doroteo Guamuche Flores and the Estadio Erick Barrondo. Both venues are located in Guatemala City.
Not participating but developing are Honduras and Nicaragua. Both countries hosted Sudamérica Rugby visits in May. In July Nicaragua was granted higher status by Sudamérica Rugby.
All six matches in the South American C Championship will be used for Americas Rankings. Americas Rugby News will update the rankings following all three rounds. At present Guatemala is 38th, or second to bottom. The reason being Ecuador defeated Guatemala earlier this year. Costa Rica, El Salvador and Panama retain their starting ranking of 30,00 points.
