Jujuy is in line to host Los Pumas vs Georgia in June 2017. The Northern Argentine city had been a contender to host one of the two matches against England. It is now the front-runner to instead host the Lelos on July 24.
Carlos Vaca Aguiar, Jujuy’s Interministerial Provincial Coordinator has demonstrated his expectation that the city will get to host another test match. “we retain the possibility of hosting another European World Cup team, that being Georgia“.
Jujuy missed out on a home test against England. The UAR instead allocated the two matches to San Juan and Santa Fé. Part of the reason for this was political. The Milagro Sala case involving the United Nations influenced the decision.
The Estadio Gimnasia y Esgrima de Jujuy and the city itself was otherwise deemed a solid candidate. The stadium’s playing surface, facilities and the city’s hotels were all well received by England management.
Jujuy, like San Juan and Santa Fé hosted matches in the 2011 Copa América. Unlike the other two, Jujuy has not been used by the UAR in recent years. The Argentina XV played host to Chile in San Juan this year while Los Pumas faced Italy in Santa Fé.
Aguiar pointed out that “the UAR has let us know that we have a certain priority. While it is not confirmed we meet all the criteria to host an event”.
