Punta del Este 7’s Seeking to Shine

Uruguay’s premier Rugby 7’s competition is seeking to attract big names. Following two years of low-key competitions there are to be changes for the 2017 tournament. Little by little the competition is seeking to gain greater international relevance.

The 7’s will be organized by Old Boys & Old Girls Club and tus to be the 28th edition. It will take place at the Campus de Maldonado rather than the Punta del Este Polo & Country Club. Confirmed participants include leading clubs from Uruguay and Argentina in addition to the senior 7’s sides.

With others to follow the Pun ta del Este 7’s is to regain status as being a part og the South American 7’s Circuit. It will join Viña del Mar as part of a restructuring which sees the South American 7’s replaced by a circuit.

Participating are to be Uruguay, Brazil, Chile and either Peru or Colombia. The two best sides will qualify for the 2017 Hong Kong Sevens. The winner will also earn the right to compete at the 2017 Las Vegas Sevens.

In addition to the above mentioned countries others are being sought to compete. Work is underway to confirm the participation of the big three from the Americas – Argentina, Canada and the USA. Fiji and South Africa are also strong possibilities.

The 2017 Punta del Este 7’s will take place on January 6-7. It marks a change from previous years in which it had been played in the final week of December.
