US Eagles lock Greg Peterson has undergone surgery on his shoulder and will miss the next six months of action. The 25-year-old suffered the injury while playing for Glasgow Warriors against Ulster on September 23 and has now been ruled out until into the new year. He will now miss the USA’s games against the New Zealand Māori, Romania, and Tonga next month, and participation in the 2017 Americas Rugby Championship also looks unlikely.
Australian-born Peterson has won 12 caps since opting to represent the Eagles, who he qualifies for via an American grandfather. He joined Glasgow immediately following the 2015 World Cup, signing for the Guinness Pro 12 club after completing a short-term contract with Leicester Tigers in the Aviva Premiership. Prior to departing Australia he had captained the North Harbour Rays in the National Rugby Championship and was an extended squad member of the Waratahs in Super Rugby.
The Eagles have several options to replace the towering forward, including uncapped 6’8″ lock Nick Civetta of the Newcastle Falcons. Two more locks of similar stature – Siaosi Mahoni and Matt Jensen – are currently in Uruguay with the USA Selects side, along with France-based Christian Ostberg.
