Peru Topple Ecuador to Finish Third in South American B Championship

Peru defeated Ecuador 60-5 this afternoon, claiming third spot in the South American B Championship.

The final round fixture of the 2016 tournament confirms that Ecuador finishes bottom. Colombia and Venezuela are to play in the final fixture of the competition. The winner will claim the tournament title and advance to face Mexico in Rugby World Cup Qualification.

Peru entered today’s match after disappointing results against Venezuela and Colombia. Having lost both fixtures Los Tumis were eliminated from Rugby World Cup 2019 qualification, a low return considering Peru was 2015 runner-up.

Ecuador’s winless campaign will see the western South American country again needing to win repechage to avoid relegation. Earlier this year Ecuador faced Guatemala, winning by just a single point. They will now wait to see who wins the upcoming South American C Championship. Costa, El Salvador and Panama will join Guatemala in the competition.
