Sagario Named New Uruguay Captain

Mario Sagario has been named the new Uruguay captain. The 30-year-old will lead Los Teros on their three-match European tour. Uruguay will play away to Germany, Romania and Spain.

Sagario will be standing-in for back-rowers Juan Gaminara and Alejandro Nieto who are both out injured. All three played at Rugby World Cup 2015, doing so under the captaincy of  Santiago Vilaseca.

With 51 test matches to his name Sagario is one of Uruguay’s most experienced players. He is also guaranteed selection in the run-on team at all times. So outstanding was Sagario in 2015 that he was signed for Munster to play in the Guinness Pro 12.

Having debuted in 2006, Sagario has been playing test rugby for a decade. His debut was a 43-15 win over Chile. Last year in England and Wales he was Uruguay’s starting tight-head prop for all four pool matches.

Having completed his contract with Munster Sagario is back in Montevideo. He plays for Carrasco Polo and is involved in the High Performance program.

Before November Sagario will feature for the Uruguay XV in the Americas Pacific Challenge. He was named in the roster announced yesterday by the URU.
