Colombia Run Riot Against Ecuador

The 2016 South American B Championship is underway. In the opening fixture Colombia ran riot against Ecuador, winning 75-5.

Colombia’s impressive win was by 13 tries to 1. It was also a game in which Colombia demonstrated vastly superior discipline. Ecuador’s problems saw four different players yellow carded.

Captain Sebastián Mejia led from the front. The number 8 from Medellín scored two tries. His back-row partner Gerson Ortiz also performed well, scoring a hat-trick. Fullback Arley Urrutia and left winger Maicol Machado both also scored two tries each for Los Tucanes.

The result sets up a second round fixture on Wednesday against the loser of Peru vs Venezuela. Ecuador will also play on Wednesday, facing the winner of the aforementioned fixture.

This year’s edition of the tournament doubles as Rugby World Cup qualifying. The winner of the tournament will advance to face Mexico in the following round of qualifying. Mexico enjoyed a big win over Caribbean rivals Guyana on Saturday.
