Uruguay is close to obtaining home tests vs England and Georgia, writes Ignacio Chans. The URU is involved in conversations with both unions who are to play test matches in Argentina in June 2017.
Uruguay seeks to play one match against both of the European countries, doing so before their respective matches against Argentina.
England’s previous tour to Argentina was in 2013. On that occasion England played two test matches against Los Pumas after a match against a South American XV in Uruguay.
The June 2013 Internationals also featured a test match between Argentina and Georgia. 2017 will there by be a repeat for Argentina. The difference being Uruguay now has pulling power having competed at Rugby World Cup 2015.
Talks have taken place between English Head Coach Eddie Jones and Uruguay’s High Performance Center Director Pablo Lemoine. Jones told Lemoine that he intends for England to have a warm-up match before facing Argentina.
Currently ranked second in the world England is expected to lose a host of players to the 2017 British and Irish Lions. The composite side will tour New Zealand in June and July, leaving Jones without many top names.
Confirmation of the URU’s proposal is expected out in the first week of October. Should Uruguay host England and Georgia it would be truly be a breakthrough for Los Teros and for global rugby.
