Uruguay down Chile to Qualify for 2017 Junior World Trophy

Uruguay will play in the 2017 World Rugby Junior World Trophy. Los Teritos earned the right to compete in the under 20 Tier 2 competition today, defeating Chile in Santiago.

Both Uruguay and Chile went into today’s final with perfect records. They had both defeated Brazil and Paraguay earlier in the tournament to set up a winner-takes-all final. Coming out on top was Uruguay who won the final 23-13.

Los Teritos will need to wait to confirm where exactly the 2017 Junior World Trophy will be staged. World Rugby is yet to determine the location.

Interested in hosting is Uruguay. The URU have formally announced their candidacy for the tournament.  World Rugby has supported the initiative which would take the competition to Uruguay for the first time.

If Uruguay secures hosting rights it would be the third time it has been played in South America and the fourth in the Americas overall. Chile hosted the competition in 2008 and 2013 in Chile while the USA did so in 2012.
