Lavanini set for Knee Surgery

Argentina has suffered a massive blow to their Rugby Championship hopes, and indeed their plans for the November internationals as giant lock Tomás Lavanini has been ruled out with a serious knee injury. The 23-year-old limped off early in the second half against South Africa on Saturday and scans have now confirmed a torn anterior cruciate ligament. He will have surgery in 3-4 weeks and then faces at least six months on the sidelines in recovery.

The news comes as a terrible time for the Pumas whose hopes of achieving a second Rugby Championship victory are at an all-time high. It also throws into question once again the selection policy of ignoring overseas players with Guido Petti reportedly set to sign for Toulon and uncapped teenager Marcos Kremer called into the squad as a replacement. Such a move by Petti would leave Matías Alemanno as the only experienced international lock available to the Pumas should they insist on continuing to leave out the likes of Mariano Galarza and Manuel Carizza.
