Ecuador Narrowly Down Guatemala in Guayaquil

Ecuador will play in the 2016 South American B Championship, it was confirmed today. In narrowing downing Guatemala 26-25 in Guayaquil today Ecuador secured the final place in the upcoming tournament.

Lima, Peru will be the setting for this year’s South American B Championship. Like the 2015 edition Ecuador will join Colombia, Peru and Venezuela. But unlike last year the winner of this year’s competition will advance to face either Guyana or Mexico in a Rugby World Cup repechage qualifier.

For Guatemala it was a case of so close yet so far. Los Jaguares did themselves proud but ultimately missed out by a solitary point. The 26-25 loss saw a determined Guatemala fighting back from a large half time deficit.

An impressive opening half from Ecuador saw Los Piqueros leading 21-3. But, with a spot at promotion to the South American B Championship Guatemala gave it their all and came agonizingly close.

In falling short Guatemala will play again in the South American C Championship this year. The Central American republic came out as surprise winners in 2015. Their wins over Costa Rica, Panama and El Salvador earned them the right to face Ecuador today.
