Davis arrives in New Zealand

There could be another American appearing in the Mitre 10 Cup before long. PRO Rugby sensation Spike Davis has touched down in New Zealand just two days ago and will suit up for the Tasman Griffins against Otago ‘B’ on Saturday. Davis will start on the bench in the reserve-grade fixture, with an eye to ascending into the senior Tasman Makos team rapidly and possibly catching the eyes of Super Rugby selectors.

The strapping winger from Dallas, Texas, enjoyed a breakthrough season with the Ohio Aviators in the inaugural American competition, scoring 14 tries in 12 games with an impressive combination of pace and power. To date the 26-year-old has not been capped by the Eagles at test level though he has represented the USA Falcons development side, most recently at the Las Vegas invitational in March.

Should Davis crack the Makos lineup, he will join three other PRO exports in the Mitre 10 Cup. Denver Stampede prop Chris Baumann is at Wellington, San Francisco Rush loose forward Bill Fukofuka at Southland, and San Diego Breakers prop Jake Ilnicki has joined Manawatu. US Eagles flanker Tony Lamborn is at Hawke’s Bay, and American-born outside back Toni Pulu plays for Counties Manukau.
