The under 18 sides of Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela were all in action today. The four countries played in what was the opening day of the 2016 South American under 18 Championship.
Played in South America’s only World Rugby certified artificial surface in Chiclayo, Peru the competition is to be spread over three rounds. Round two will be played on Wednesday August 24 followed by round three on Saturday August 27.
In the first round today Venezuela took on Mexico in the opening fixture. Although Venezuela is far and away the more traditional of the two it was the Aztec country that proved to be significantly better. Mexico’s 59-5 hammering of Venezuela underlines the rapid rugby progress being achieved in the North American country.
Venezuela’s one try in the match came early. At one point it was a 10-5 scoreline. Mexico, though, went ahead 24-5 at half time before more than doubling their score in the second half. With it Las Serpientes appear to offer the greatest challenge to the defending champions, Colombia.
Signs of an even contest between Mexico and Colombia are yet to appear. Indeed, while Las Serpientes were far too strong for Venezuela the performance of the day belonged to Colombia. The two-time reigning champions ran out 74-0 winners against Peru.
In round two on Wednesday Mexico and Colombia will both be looking to win again. Las Serpientes will be up against Los Tumis (Peru) while Los Tucanes are to face the Venezuelans.
