Healy Explains New Role in Brazilian Rugby

The CBRu recently confirmed the arrival of Australian Paul Healy as the director of the High Performance Center in São Paulo. The move sees the former Chilean Head Coach back in South America after leaving Santiago late last year.

He departed Chile for Germany where he took charge of TVP Pforzheim. The club won the German national title, the Rugby Bundesliga. In addition Healy arrives in São Paulo after having had a range of prior senior roles in Australia, France, Uruguay and Wales.

Upon resigning from the position of Los Cóndores Head Coach Healy accepted an interview with Americas Rugby News. He has now taken the time to outline his new position. He told Americas Rugby News that common values between himself and the CBRu are behind the move.

“Taking this role has presented another great challenge for me personally and I am excited to have the opportunity of bringing my experiences and expertise that I have, especially from within South America, to move rugby forward in Brazil and continue on improving performances, achieving competitive results and delivering realistic long term objectives that the Brazilian Rugby Federation have planned and presented.

“There are many ongoing, important projects and there is a large amount of work to be continued on with after the Olympics in August. They are working hard towards implementing these structures and to ensure the appropriate people required are involved and have a strong focus to contributing to continuing with the longer term objectives and consistent development and success of rugby in Brazil.

“My principal function will be as the High Performance Manager based in São Paulo with a focus to develop players through the processes of Rugby Academies, Club rugby, High level competitions and any positive rugby opportunities that can be implemented. I am happy also to be working closely with the enthusiastic, experienced management and coaching staff to develop and implement these structures within the national programmes directed towards all XVs and 7s programs, which will be vitally important for continued success. I am confident we will work hard together as a Federation, management and coaching team to achieve these objectives in the best way possible.

“Within countries such as Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, and Paraguay there is no doubt they have working environments where there will always be many challenges, but my belief is you have to find the best solutions for rugby development and success, improve the rugby culture and be in a position to contribute and present every opportunity to be as ‘professional as you can be’ in generally amateur environments. There are many sacrifices that rugby people here have to make to achieve this, but must be given every possible opportunity to do so, within the environment that is offered, in the best possible way.

“There are many positive things that can happen within Brazilian rugby, after the Olympics and in the future and in both forms of the game, male and female and In my recent conversations with the Federation they have delivered a clear understanding of their visions and realistic objectives of where they would like rugby to be situated here in Brazil and within the guidelines of World Rugby protocols and have a definite action plan incorporating what needs to be implemented, achieved and delivered to a calculated strategic plan.”
