CRC Final Day Permutations

Some wild results from the 2016 Johnsonville Canadian Rugby Championship have made the final day one of the most anticipated in recent memory. While previous years have seen the title come down to a one-off match, three teams are within striking range of the MacTier Cup this time around so here is an explanation of who needs what to come out on top. First, a look at where things currently stand:

TEAM GP W L T BP PTS PF PA TF TA
Ontario Blues 3 2 1 0 1 9 54 35 8 4
Prairie Wolf Pack 3 2 1 0 1 9 52 56 7 5
Atlantic Rock 3 2 1 0 0 8 55 42 7 6
BC Bears 3 0 3 0 1 1 44 72 3 10

GP – games played; W – wins; L – losses; T – ties; BP – bonus points; PTS – league points; PF – points for; PA – points against; TF – tries for; TA – tries against

On league points alone it’s conceivable that two of the top three teams finish tied on 13 points, or that both the Blues and Wolf Pack finish on 14. The tie-breaker rules are as follows:

This leaves us with the following scenarios:

a) Blues win and score four tries to collect the bonus point – Blues win title outright having beaten the Wolf Pack in their head-to-head matchup;

b) Blues win but only score three tries or less, and Wolf Pack wins with four tries or more – Wolf Pack wins title outright with 14 points to 13;

c) Blues and Wolf Pack each win with three tries or less – Blues win title by same reason as a);

d) Blues lose – winner of Rock vs Wolf Pack wins title;

e) Rock win and score four tries to collect the bonus point, Blues win but only score three tries or less – team with higher points differential wins title.
