Argentina is targeting winning Gold in Rio de Janeiro as a strong roster has been named for the Olympics. Los Pumas 7’s Head Coach Santiago Goméz Cora has combined regulars with stars from Super Rugby and Europe to piece together a formidable squad.
Juan Imhoff is the biggest name included in the roster. The Racing 92 star has had a stellar past twelve months. Before winning the Top 14 Final in Barcelona the Rosario flier also scored a double to eliminate Ireland from the World Cup and became the first player in history to score a hat-trick against South Africa.
Imhoff is to be joined by Javier Rojas who played for Albi this past season. Also of note is Jaguares outside center Matías Moroni who joined Imhoff in scoring against Ireland.
Also going to Rio de Janeiro will be Los Pumas 7’s regulars Santiago Alvarez, Juan Pablo Estelles, Rodrigo Etchart, Bautista Ezcurra, Fernando Luna, Axel Muller, Gastón Revol, Franco Sábato and Germán Schulz.
Revol has been named team captain while both Ezcurra and Muller are coming off superb seasons in which they were among the best players on the World Sevens Circuit.
Perhaps the greatest casualty is Nicolás Bruzzone. The veteran scrum half has been omitted from the roster with Gomez Cora, instead, opting for greater strike power. Others to miss out are Santiago Cordero and Javier Ortega Desio who will both remain in Argentina to prepare for the Rugby Championship.
