De Battista joins Cornish Pirates

Argentine centre Nicolás De Battista will play for the Cornish Pirates in the 2016/17 Greene King IPA Championship. The 25-year-old has signed his first professional contract with the English club on the recommendation of former Italy flyhalf Alberto Di Bernardo, a fellow Argentine who had previously sent a season in Penzance. De Battista departs the Jockey Club in Rosario where he captain of both the club and region. He has represented Argentina at age-grade level, most notably attending the Junior World Championships in 2011 with the u20 side.

After a poor start to their season, the Pirates rebounded to finish 8th in the standings. They are the current home of Canadian internationals Brett Beukeboom and Matt Evans, with a number of Americas players having previously worn their colours including Chilean prop Francisco Deformes, US Eagles centre Andrew Suniula, and recently departed Aaron Carpenter among several others. In February they hosted a pair of South American coaches – Luigi Peirano of Chile and Argentina’s Ricardo Malgor – to experience their training week in full.
