Agüero signs for Provence

Buenos Aires native Matías Agüero has signed for French Pro D2 club Aix-en-Provence. The 35-year-old loosehead prop departs Leicester Tigers, with whom he spent one season after signing as a medical joker to replace fellow Italian international Michele Rizzo in November. He won the last of his 40 caps for the Azzurri against Romania at the World Cup in October.

This will be the seventh club of Agüero’s distinguished career that spans more than a decade. He first moved to Italy to play for Rovigo in 2002 from the Regatas club in his home town of San Nicolás. Next he moved to Viadana, and then to England for a three-year stint with Saracens. A move back to Italy followed with Aironi, who were disbanded after two years and re-branded Zebre, where he stayed until he joined Leicester following the 2015 World Cup.

Provence finished at the bottom of the table last season but appear to have avoided relegation following the decision of the French governing body to demote four teams for financial reasons. A final decision is to be made today following a hearing that will determine the ultimate fate of Biarritz, Bourgoin, and Narbonne. Should any or all fail to win their appeal, Provence will stay in Pro D2.
