Americas teams will be in direct competition with each other during the pool stages of both the men’s and women’s draws for the inaugural Olympic 7s. Argentina, USA, and hosts Brazil have all landed together in Pool A of the men’s bracket, while on the women’s side Canada and Brazil are both in Pool C while the USA is in Pool A along with Colombia.
The competition kicks off with the women first starting on August 6 and finishing on August 8. Immediately afterwards on August 9 the men begin with medals awarded on August 11.
The format will be round-robin in the pool stages, with quarter-final positions given to the winners and runners-up in each pool, and the remaining two spots awarded to the top two third-place teams. Those two teams will be determined first by competition points, and secondly by points differential.
The quarter-final format will be as follows:
QF1 – 1st Pool A vs 2nd third-place
QF2 – 1st Pool B vs 1st third-place
QF3 – 1st Pool C vs 2nd Pool A
QF4 – 2nd Pool B vs 2nd Pool C
The semi-final format will be as follows:
SF1 – Winner QF1 vs Winner QF4
SF2 – Winner QF2 vs Winner QF3
