Spain are in Sevens Heaven after they shocked the rugby world with a monumental performance on Day Two in Monaco, defeating heavily favored Samoa in a nail-biting final to lift the Cup in Monaco and earn the final spot at the Olympic Games. A last-second try to 32-year-old veteran Ignacio Martín ended Samoa’s dreams and sent the Spanish fans in attendance into ecstasy.
The achievement is extraordinary given that Spain were not a core team during the 2015-16 HSBC Sevens Series and in fact have not made a single senior tournament appearance since being relegated from core status in 2014.
Earlier in the day both Americas hopefuls, Canada and Chile, were knocked out in the quarter finals. Canada would win their remaining two games to finish in 5th place, while Chile were sent home early by Hong Kong in the 5th place semi final.
Uruguay defeated Tunisia in their first match of the day but were overpowered by Tonga in their second. Mexico never quite got out of first gear, falling first to Zimbabwe and then Sri Lanka.
