Knee injury ends season for Buydens

Hubert Buydens has been ruled out of Canada’s June test series and the remainder of the PRO Rugby season with an ACL injury. The loosehead prop suffered the blow late in the match against the Ohio Aviators while in action for the San Diego Breakers 10 days ago. He attempted to stay on with a heavily wrapped knee but was forced off, and the injury has now been confirmed to be of the serious variety.

Buydens was due to re-join the Manawatu Turbos in New Zealand’s National Provincial Competition following the completion of the PRO Rugby season, but he will now miss out on that contract in its entirety. The 34-year-old captained Canada during the Americas Rugby Championship and was expected to play a senior role during the June tests. He has now been replaced in the group by Ryan Kotlewski of the Wolf Pack, who was part of the initial extended squad and has been training with the side since.

The news is a severe blow to the veteran, who is now set to miss Canada’s European tour in November with a rehabilitation of several months expected. Buydens has won 43 caps since making his debut in 2006, and was first choice loosehead at both the 2011 and 2015 World Cups.
