Colombian Women’s Sevens Feature at Halftime Soccer Matches

In an effort to boost the profile of rugby in the country the Federación Colombiana de Rugby have acted to have Rugby Sevens played at the half-time break during soccer matches.

World Rugby reports that Rugby is a fast growing sport Colombia with playing numbers having doubled in the last five years. Numbers have increased from 8,000 to 20,000 since 2011.

Colombia qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games, earning their place in 2015 in Santa Fé, Argentina. Efforts to promote the women’s upcoming campaign in Rio de Janeiro have seen matches played in Medellín.

Such matches involving the Deportivo Independent Medellín and Atlantic Nacional clubs have had between 22,000 and 30,000 spectators in attendance.
