Pichot: Argentina Needs 250 Contracted Players

Within 10 years Argentina needs 250 contracted players, claims the incoming World Rugby Vice Chairman Agustín Pichot. The figure is a notable jump from the present number of 80, a reflection of the evolving status of professional rugby in the country.

Currently with one Super Rugby franchise plans for the future include more, a second desired to be added before Rugby World Cup 2019. Record revenues being generated and increased power in SANZAAR and World Rugby are enabling the changes.

As part of the transition the UAR has outlawed players based abroad from playing for Los Pumas. The only exceptions to this rule are those playing Super Rugby for rival franchises. Tomás Cubelli and Tomás Leonardi both thereby qualify.

Off limits are World Cup stars who remain in Europe including Marcos Ayerza, Juan Imhoff, Marcelo Bosch, and Juan Figallo.
