Fiji have claimed their second consecutive HSBC Sevens Series title. A victory over Australia in the pool stages on Day One of the London 7s on Saturday moved them into the Cup quarter finals and meant that South Africa could no longer catch them on overall points. An opening match defeat to England – that featured the debut of high-profile NFL import Jarryd Hayne – was music to the ears of the Blitzbokke, but resounding victories over Wales and Australia saw them breeze through.
This marks the third time Fiji have been crowned HSBC Series champions, and the first time they have done so in back-to-back seasons. With the Olympic debut of sevens rugby set to take place from August 9-11 in Rio de Janeiro, Fiji now look in pole position to bring home a first ever Olympic medal for the island nation. Coach Ben Ryan and captain Osea Kolinisau spoke to World Rugby following the achievement.
