Ohio has suffered a hammer blow with the news that star flyhalf JP Eloff has broken his left fibula and damaged ankle ligaments. The injury occurred early in the match against San Diego on the weekend, with Eloff carted off in obvious discomfort. He underwent surgery on Monday morning.
Eloff will now miss June’s international tests, and will almost certainly be lost for the remainder of the PRO season. It will be disappointing news for John Mitchell, with the creative playmaker earmarked for a possible role in the midfield or as an ideal impact sub from the bench for the Eagles.
The bad news continues for Ohio with several players already sidelined and a handful suffering from concussion. Peter Malcolm and Shaun Davies missed the match at Torero Stadium and Filippo Ferrarini was a late scratch before kickoff. Kyle Baillie took a knock to the head shortly after Eloff departed and was also forced to come off.
Roland Suniula moved to first receiver during the San Diego game and looks to be the best option in the short term, while Chris Kunkel and Robbie Shaw are other immediate alternatives. Given the severity of the injury it could well mean drafting in a new player to the roster.
