Uruguay Secure South American A Championship Title

Uruguay secured the 2016 South American ‘A’ Championship title, defeating Chile 39-14 in Montevideo on Saturday afternoon. The victory was notable for not only being a championship deciding fixture but for also the efficient game plan utilized by Los Teros who ran out convincing winners.

The visiting Los Cóndores gave it their all. Chile were, without question, worthy opposition and proved to be strong adversaries. For 60 minutes Chile were in the contest. It took the final quarter for the better prepared and fitter home side to run away with the contest.

Uruguay’s back-rower Gonzalo Campomar continued his highly impressive form as he crossed for the game’s opening try. In doing so Campomar completed the treble in also having scored in earlier matches against both Brazil and Paraguay.

Campomar’s 7th minute try was converted by Los Cuervos flyhalf Martín Secco. Any thoughts of Los Teros running away with the contest early were quashed when Los Cóndores hit back through José Ignacio Larenas.

The goal-kicking outside center Matías Nordenflycht made it a 7-7 scoreline by landing the conversion. Uruguay, though took little time to canceling out Chile’s try as Old Boys back-rower Juan Manuel Gaminara replied to make it a 14-7 scoreline.

The seven point lead was extended to 10 as Secco kicked his first of two penalties of the afternoon. A vibrant Chilean side, nonetheless, refused to give in and Los Cóndores would score next through right wing Felipe Brangier. The converted try brought it back to a three point game early in the second half.

Chile’s hard-fought come back would not go any further. Instead it was all Uruguay for the remainder of the match. Leading the way was Los Cuervos outside center Joaquín Prada who crossed for two second half tries. Also getting in on the action was fullback Rodrigo Silva. Their three tries made it a convincing win.

Los Teros are to now face the Fiji Warriors before completing the Sudamérica Rugby Cup by hosting the Argentina XV in Colonia del Sacramento on May 28. Chile will play host to the Argentina XV on June 06 in Santiago.
