Aaron Carpenter’s long-rumoured move to London Welsh is now official. The Canadian no8 bids farewell to Cornish Pirates and Mennaye Field after three seasons with the club and heads nearly 300 miles west to Old Deer Park in Richmond on the outskirts of London. Carpenter is effectively a replacement for his World Cup teammate Richard Thorpe, who has retired from professional rugby to pursue real estate interests and become head coach of Chinnor in National League 2 South.
At the age of 33, Carpenter is now entering the latter stages of his career but has looked revitalised with the Pirates this season since abandoning his experiment that saw him play hooker for the best part of 18 months for Canada. In 13 starts since the World Cup he scored seven tries while also captaining the side. The former Canadian captain has now won 71 caps for his country and could be set to add to his total in a month’s time under new head coach Mark Anscombe given his fine domestic form.
