Following the completion of the opening round of competition Chile and Uruguay top the South American A Championship Standings. Chile soundly defeated Paraguay in the opening fixture while Uruguay followed it up by humbling Brazil in South America’s largest city.
With the South American A Championship not operating according to the points system used in most tournaments such as the Rugby World Cup and Americas Rugby Championship points are only allocated for wins or draws. Both Chile and Uruguay collected three points for winning their respective matches but neither obtained a bonus point due to them being non-existent.
Brazil and Paraguay both trail the leaders by three points and will be in search of their first points of the competition in round two on April 30. Both are to have home advantage with Brazil hosting Chile in São Paulo and Paraguay taking-on Uruguay in Asunción.
A win for either home team would be an upset and would open up the competition. Taking place on May 7 will be round three. Round one winners Chile and Uruguay will face-off in Montevideo while Paraguay will have home advantage against Brazil.
All four competitors are playing for the right to participate in the 2017 Sudamérica Rugby Cup. The top two will earn the right to compete in the competition together with Argentina.
