Kenya stunned the field in Singapore as the 8th ranked side in the world crushed overall leaders Fiji 30-7 in the final to claim their first ever HSBC Sevens Series Cup title. A Collins Injera penalty goal in the dying moments of the semi final knocked out Argentina in dramatic fashion to set up the incredible finale.
The Pumas skipped past Samoa in the quarter finals en route to their meeting with Kenya, and came up against an overwhelming South African side on the Bronze final to finish in 4th place overall. Only three points now separate them from the USA, who dropped the Bowl final to Scotland after outclassing Russia and Portugal on Day Two.
Canada’s dreadful run of form continued as they crashed out of the tournament in the Shield semis, finishing a tournament with no wins for the first time in six years. They look destined to finish in 13th place overall as they now sit 10 points behind Wales and 13 above both Japan and Russia with only two tournaments to go.
The unpredictable results of Day One and New Zealand’s Plate final loss to Samoa mean that Fiji’s overall lead is stretched to eight points over South Africa with New Zealand a dozen in arrears. Canada’s main Olympic rivals Samoa jump to 9th, but need to make up a 13 point gap if they are to catch England.
Next stop on the HSBC circuit is Paris starting on May 13, the penultimate event of the season. London is the 10th and final destination a week later, just one month ahead of the final Olympic qualifying tournament set for June 19 in Monaco.
