Canada tops on Langford Day One

Hosts Canada emerged from Day One of the Langford 7s in fine form, with three wins from three to take the lead in Pool C and waltz into the Cup finals on Day Two. After dominant wins over Japan and Ireland, a Bianca Farella try earned them a hugely satisfying 5-0 victory over England, getting one back after dropping the Bronze final to the same team in Atlanta a week ago. Perhaps most impressively, the Canadians failed to concede a single point as they hunt for their first Cup win on this year’s HSBC Women’s Sevens Series.

USA struggled on their first day, suffering a shock defeat to Spain in their opener. A last second charge down landed in the hands of Patricia Garcia, who fell over the line for a try and a 10-7 win. The Eagles rebounded with a 24-12 win over Fiji, but then came up short against New Zealand to finish the day with only one win from three. Regardless, they have scraped into the Cup draw on points differential and meet England in the semi final.

South America’s only participant Brazil were winless on Day One, with decisive losses to Russia, Australia, and France. They finish the day on the bottom of Pool A and will face Ireland in the Bowl semi final.

Series leaders Australia and New Zealand each came through undefeated to top their respective pools. All Day Two matches will be streamed live by World Rugby, with the finals broadcast live on TSN in Canada.
