With an eye to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro efforts are being doubled both from within Brazil and internationally. To help the host nation’s players improve their preparations there is to be an Australian Coaching Clinic in Brazil this month.
In the final week of April Michael O’Connor and Jayson Brewer will travel to Brazil to take part in an intensive clinic with Brazil’s High Performance rugby roster. The initiative is part of an agreement reached between the Confederação Brasileira de Rugby (CBRu) and the Australian Rugby Union (ARU).
The training clinics are to take place in Santa Catarina state from April 24-26 and in São José dos Campos from April 27-29 in the official training centers used by the CBRu for international purposes. The clinics are to involve workshops for both rugby XV and Sevens as well as second round preparation of the South American A Championship, with matches being played on April 23 and 30.
Michael O’Connor was a professional until 1992, finishing his career playing rugby league for the Manly-Warringa Sea Eagles in the NRL. He was a champion in the competition after previously having been a Wallaby before switching codes due to rugby being amateur at the time. Jayson Brewer is an experienced coach who now works as the ARUY’s National Training Developmental Manager.
