Canadian lock Brett Beukeboom will take no further part in the Greene King IPA Championship season. The 25-year-old suffered a knee injury while playing for Cornish Pirates against London Welsh in the British & Irish Cup semi-final a week ago. While the severity of the damage has yet to be confirmed, he has been ruled out of the final month of the domestic season and the injury casts major doubt on his availability to Canada for the June international series against Japan, Russia, and Italy.
The news will not be welcome to incoming Canada coach Mark Anscombe, who despite being largely unfamiliar with the side will have looked to his established professionals for his first games in charge. Beukeboom has won 18 caps for Canada since his debut in 2012, starting three of four matches during the 2015 World Cup.
Beukeboom has been a regular in the Pirates lineup this year since returning from international duty, his first season at the club after switching from Plymouth Albion in the summer. Fellow internationals Aaron Carpenter and Matt Evans are also at the Penzance-based club. Beukeboom’s contract runs until the end of the 2016-17 season.
