A fit-again Gonzalo Tiesi returned to the rugby field this past weekend, playing 80 minutes for the second-string Newcastle side against Gloucester’s. The match was an Aviva Premiership ‘A’ fixture and Tiesi was joined by a second Argentine player, Santiago Socino.
Having been injured playing a Premiership match against Bath last April, Tiesi has been out for close to a year. Now having overcome multiple injuries the 30 year old is ready for Premiership Game Time and may be considered to play for the Newcastle Falcons this coming weekend.
Newcastle is Tiesi’s fifth professional rugby club overall and his fourth in England. Having debuted for Los Pumas as a teenager he joined London Irish in 2005 and after three seasons moved to Harlequins. It was at the London based club in which he was arguably at his best as his move to Paris to play for Stade Français was spoiled by injury.
After a return to Buenos Aires club, SIC in 2012 Tiesi was recruited by London Welsh whom he played six matches for in the Premiership in 2013. That year saw him dropped for the first time in his international career and, despite joining Newcastle, he is yet to receive a recall.
To date Tiesi has been capped 37 times by Argentina, starting on 33 occasions. The last of his six tries was against Scotland in Tucumán in 2010. So far he has played 21 matches for Newcastle and may now join former Pumas Belisario Agulla and Juan Pablo Socino in remaining matches this season.
