Former All Black great Mils Muliaina has signed with PRO Rugby. The organization ended speculation that had emerged in recent weeks by today announcing that the 35-year-old fullback will indeed be joining the San Francisco franchise. Muliaina leaves his Guinness Pro 12 contract with Zebre early to take up the opportunity. In doing so he becomes the third player from the Italian club to join the league, following in the footsteps of Mirco Bergamasco and Filippo Ferrarini.
First capped in 2003, the Samoan-born star represented New Zealand at three World Cups, including the victorious 2011 campaign where he won the last of his 100 test caps. Only five players have more All Black appearances – all contemporaries – and he remains the most-capped fullback of any country in test history. He is 9th on the all-time All Blacks try-scoring list, with only Christian Cullen scoring more in the no15 shirt.
Muliaina also enjoyed a long Super Rugby career with more than 150 appearances split between the Blues and Chiefs. He spent two years with NTT Docomo in Japan following the 2011 World Cup and after a brief return to Super Rugby with the Chiefs he moved to Ireland to play for Connacht in the 2014-15 season. To date Muliaina has made 10 appearances for Zebre since his debut in October, starting eight times.
