Former Italy ‘A’ flanker Filippo Ferrarini is now officially part of PRO Rugby. His move abroad to the new American professional competition had been apparent since being granted an early release from his Guinness Pro 12 contract with Zebre two weeks ago, but his final destination was unknown. That has now been confirmed as Ohio, where he will link up with Head Coach Paule Barford’s franchise.
The 25-year-old openside specialist graduated through the Italian age-grade system to achieve national senior ‘A’ honors in the 2013 Nations Cup. Originally from the Noceto club, he joined the Italian Super 10 (now Eccellenza) side Crociati in 2010, and was drafted into the Pro 12 regional side Aironi for the 2011-12 season. The franchise was moved from Viadana to Parma the following season and re-branded Zebre, where he would stay for the next four seasons.
Injuries have restricted his appearances to only five senior matches over the last two seasons, but now fully recovered he joins fellow Zebre export Mirco Bergamasco for the inaugural PRO season, albeit on different teams. A third Zebre player, former All Black great Mils Muliaina, is rumored to be heading to the San Francisco franchise but has yet to be confirmed.
