Italian rugby star Mirco Bergamasco is set to move across the Atlantic and join a PRO Rugby franchise. Just hours after confirmation of Pedrie Wannenburg’s signature, multiple Italian sources are now reporting that the 33-year-old will also make the jump to the USA after being granted an early release from his contract with Guinness Pro 12 club Zebre three weeks ago. No team has yet been specified, but speculation is that the move will be confirmed by PRO Rugby later Monday afternoon.
The brother of legendary flanker Mauro, Mirco won the first of 89 international caps in 2002 and was a staple in the Azzurri side for a decade, appearing in three World Cups before suffering a debilitating knee injury against Australia in 2012. He returned to the Italian training squad for the 2014 Six Nations but never again regained a spot on the match day roster.
An accurate goal kicker capable of playing either on the wing or in the midfield, Bergamasco scored 168 points for Rovigo in his comeback during the 2013-14 season. He signed for Parma-based Zebre the following year and featured in 20 matches, but had not seen any game time in the 2015-16 season, with the presence of several current Italian internationals restricting his opportunities.
