Brazil Crowned Sul Americano Sevens Champions

Brazil’s preparation to host the 2016 Olympic Games received a positive infield boost today as Brazil were Crowned Sul Americano Sevens Champions.  In winning Brazil not only retained their title but did so for for the thirteenth consecutive year.

Titled Aquece Rio, or Rio Warm-up, the two-day women’s Rugby Sevens tournament brought together eight South American countries. They competed in the heat of Brazil’s second largest city and did so at the Parque Olímpico Deodoro, the same venue that will host the 2016 Olympic Games.

Brazil won the title by defeating Argentina 27-5 in the final. Earlier in the day the Portuguese speaking country had recorded Quarter Final and Semi Final wins over Chile and Colombia. The extent of Brazil’s superiority can be seen in Argentina’s one try being the only try conceded by Brazil in the tournament.

The Rio 2016 bound Colombia finished third, downing neighbors Venezuela 14-0. The remaining final places saw Paraguay finishing 5th, Chile 6th, Peru 7th and Uruguay 8th.
