Brazil, Argentina Impress on Day One in Rio

Hosts Brazil and south-western neighbors Argentina went undefeated on day one of the Rio 2016 Rugby Sevens preparatory tournament.

Brazil dominated all opponents, winning by 22 or more in all matches and conceding no points in the process. Combined with previous results the Brazilian women’s Rugby Sevens side have, remarkably, gone undefeated against South American opposition for 55 games.

Brazil is one of two South American countries confirmed for the 2016 Olympic Games. The other is Colombia who defeated Chile 22-0 and Paraguay 34-0 but came unstuck against Argentina, losing 19-15.

The Argentine women had a solid day in Rio. Before facing Colombia the Argentines had overcome Paraguay 32-0 and Chile 41-0. The four point win came after Argentina had initially been leading Las Tucanes 14-0.

Argentina still has an opportunity of qualifying for the Olympic Games. Together with Venezuela, Argentina will compete at the final qualifying tournament in Dublin, Ireland in June.

Venezuela had a good day, defeating Uruguay 31-12 and Peru 19-07. The 22-0 loss against the hosts means Venezuela finished second in Group A.
