Uruguay’s first home match of the Americas Rugby Championship was a thriller. In a match in which the lead changed hands and the result could have been different in the final seconds of play, Los Teros pushed for a second win over the developmental Argentine side in as many years.
Moved from the home stadium in Montevideo to Punta del Este, Uruguay vs Argentina was a fixture that attracted tourists from both countries. While the play was a stop-start affair those in attendance were treated to an enthralling contest.
With an eye to the future both countries experimented, fielding players who could go on to be long term stays at test match level. The teams will meet again on May 28 in the 2016 Sudamérica Rugby Cup with Uruguay again hosting the fixture.
Uruguay face Chile away this coming weekend while the Argentina XV play their second of two home matches, taking on Canada in Rosario. Neither the Argentina XV nor Canada can afford a loss if they are to challenge the competition’s leaders, the USA.
