Comodoro Rivadavia tipped to host Argentina vs Italy

The Southern Argentine city of Comodoro Rivadavia is tipped to host Argentina vs Italy this coming June. A Pleno Rugby has reported  that everything indicates that the Estadio Municipal in Comodoro Rivadavia will play host to the fixture on June 11.

Although the UAR is yet to confirm the location of the fixture or the match itself the match appears set in stone. A recent meeting which brought together the Provincial Deputy of Chubut Roddy Ingram together with coach Carlos Coustet and the President of  Chubut Deportes (Chubut Sports), Walter Ñonquepán sparked the rumor which was posted on the Chubut Sports website.

The fixture will be the first ever test match in the city and the second overall in Patagonia. In 2006 Argentina played host to Wales in Puerto Madryn, 440km to the north of Comodoro Rivadavia but also located in Chubut province.

Since that time it has been regular UAR policy to move home matches around the country and with great effect. Buenos Aires’ prior monopoly of home fixtures has given way to Córdoba, La Plata, Mar del Plata, Mendoza, Resistencia, Rosario, Salta, San Juan, Santa Fé and Tucumán all hosting test matches over the past decade.

Comodoro Rivadavia is now set to join the list and is certain to win over the imagination of the local population. In addition to welcoming an international match, the city is also the home town of Jaguars and Pumas tighthead prop Ramiro Herrera.

Comodoro Rivadavia’s Estadio Municipal has a capacity of 8,300. It was opened in 1975. With a population of 177,000 Comodoro Rivadavia is the largest city in Chubut. The much smaller Puerto Madryn has a population of 94,000.
