Argentina win Viña del Mar 7’s

Completing an impressive start to 2016 Argentina have won the Viña del Mar 7’s in Chile. The tournament title follows winning the American Sevens last weekend at home in Mar del Plata. The Argentine side regathered from an opening day loss against South Africa to go unbeaten on day two and win the tournament.

Also victorious was Córdoba Athletic who won the club section of the tournament, overcoming PWCC 40-5 in the final. The title made it a double for the Córdoba side after the club also won the recent Punta del Este Sevens in December.

Argentina’s opponents in the final was not the South African Academy Sevens team but Brazil. The Tupis impressed on day two downing the USA and Peru to earn the right to dispute the final against Argentina. Brazil’s competitiveness saw them well poised at the midway point of the final. Argentina, though increased the 19-12 lead to a 33-12 victory in the second half.

Argentina reached the final after powering past Uruguay in the Quarter Finals and also proving to be too strong for Chile in the Semi Finals. Los Condores faces South Africa in the Plate Final, losing 29-12.

All six countries that will compete in the inaugural Americas Rugby Championship had Sevens sides representing them this weekend in Viña del Mar. The tournament will kick-off on February 06 with Canada vs Uruguay, USA vs Argentina and Chile vs Brazil.
