The Year 2016 for Uruguay Rugby

A complete calendar of rugby matches for Uruguay at all levels has been released by the URU. The Year 2016 for Uruguay Rugby will be groundbreaking with more rugby than ever before for Los Teros while the Uruguay XV, Los Teros 7s, Uruguay under 20s and the national club competitions are also all big winners.

International involvement for Uruguay got underway this past weekend in Mar del Plata with the American Sevens and will continue this coming weekend in Chile with the Viña del Mar Sevens. Following a two week break international commitments will spring into life like never before as the Americas Rugby Championship will begin what is to be 13 test matches for Los Teros in 2016.

Los Teros
The five internationals in the Americas Rugby Championship will be followed by two matches in the CONSUR Cup in May, three matches in the World Rugby Nations Cup in June and three end of year away tests in Europe at yet to be determined locations.

Uruguay XV
Uruguay’s ‘A’ side, the Uruguay XV will play against Brazil and Paraguay during the final two weekends of April and will compete in Argentina’s National Provincial Championship, the Torneo Argentino de Uniones from October – December. There will be opportunity for those who perform well to play for Los Teros in the weeks following the South American Championship and the start of the Torneo Argentino de Uniones.

Los Teros 7s
Following this weekend’s competition in Chile, Los Teros 7s will next be playing international competition in April when they compete in the world’s premier annual event, the Hong Kong Sevens. Qualification for the Olympic Games will follow in late June which, if successful, will be followed by an appearance in Rio 2016. Bringing the year to a close for Los Teros 7s will be three weekends of the Seven UAR in December followed by the final competition of the year – The Punta del Este 7s.

Los Teritos
Uruguay under 20’s will compete in the World Rugby Junior World Trophy in April in Zimbabwe. In order to prepare for this Los Teritos are to play against both Georgia and Argentina at under 20 level with the matches being played in February and March. The u20 South American Championship will be played in September followed by a match against Los Pumitas in October.

Clubs
Uruguayan clubs Old Christians and Old Boys, beginning in March will dispute the Torneo Argentino de Clubes. Shortly thereafter they will compete in the Campeonato Uruguayo de Primera División while the Campeonato Uruguayo will be played from July-September, with the final being played in early October.

Club competitions will continue in October and be followed by national Rugby Sevens competition to bring the year to a close. The compete calendar is displayed below:
