São Paulo State to host Brazil’s Americas Rugby Championship Games

The governing body of rugby in Brazil, the CBRu has confirmed venues for the Americas Rugby Championship. In doing so São Paulo state is to host Brazil’s Americas Rugby Championship Games, with the rest of the country missing out.

The late announcement is due to the uncertainty of where to stage the three home matches, with the match against Uruguay having initially been planned to be staged in Rio Grande do Sul state. Changes also see matches moved from the previously confirmed venue of Pacaembu Stadium.

Fortunate to be playing twice on the road and three times at home, the Tupis will take-on Rugby World Cup 2015 participants Uruguay, the USA and Argentina playing in the Portuguese speaking nation in rounds two, four and five.

Additional matches will be in Santiago against Chile in round one and in Langford, BC against Canada in round three. All eyes in Brazil, though have been on Pacaembu Stadium which set a national attendance record for a rugby match when Brazil hosted Germany in November.

The crowd of 10,460 at Pacaembu received rave reviews for their behavior but a return to the 1950 FIFA World Cup venue will have to wait. The first to play in Brazil, Uruguay, will do so at the Arena Barueri in Greater São Paulo. Pictured above, the stadium has played host to test rugby in the past.

The Arena Barueri, though, will not become the Cathedral of rugby as the two remaining home matches will be played at different stadiums. The first of which is to be the Estádio do Canindé, the same venue which played host to Brazil vs Colombia in December.

From there the hotbed of Brazilian rugby, São José dos Campos will be treated the match all of Brazil’s rugby community is looking forward to the most – Argentina. The final round fixture will take place at the Estádio Martins Pereira in the city located 94km northeast of São Paulo.
