Fulcher named BC Bears Head Coach

Former Ireland international Gabriel Fulcher has been named as the new Head Coach for the BC Bears. A winner of 20 caps as a lock between 1994 and 1998, Fulcher also enjoyed a successful club career with Irish province Leinster and London Irish in the English Premiership. He succeeds Dean Murten as Head Coach, who continues his primary role as provincial High Performance Manager.

Fulcher arrived in Canada in September to head up the UBCOB Ravens, a move announced last May. He had previously been Director of Rugby at Dublin school St. Mary’s College, and prior to that Head Coach of Belvedere College. He also had stints as Head Coach of Leinster u20 and as an assistant with Ireland u18.

Joining him is another second row, former Canadian international Mike James. The 56-cap veteran appeared in four World Cups and enjoyed a long professional career with Top 14 side Stade Français. James coached the Bears for four seasons upon his return to Canada in 2007 and will act as General Manager in the new setup.

The Bears began open training sessions this week ahead of their season that starts on June 3 against the touring England Counties side before opening their Canadian Rugby Championship account against the defending champion Wolf Pack a month later.
