Eagle 7s Head Coach Mike Friday has announced his training camp roster for the next round of the HSBC World Series. The USA currently sits in 3rd place in the standings as the team prepares for the Wellington and Sydney stops. The squad will get a huge boost as Danny Barrett returns to the mix coming off of an injury. The powerful forward has game changing ability and controls the contact area like few players on the circuit. Shalom Suniula, who has seen more time playing XVs recently, has also been brought into camp. Another boost to the forward pack is the return of Thretton Palamo, who recently rejoined the 7s residency program after playing professionally overseas.
The USA is off to their best start in team history and currently sit in their highest standing. Despite the solid start, there has been plenty of room for improvement for the squad. Something that should prove to be exciting for fans of the team.
“We were well and truly humbled in the Cape Town Cup Quarterfinal by Kenya,” Friday said in a release from USA Rugby, “and were taught a hugely valuable lesson that you have to earn it every second of every minute in the game of sevens, and cannot afford to take things for granted or be slightly off in physical and mental preparation.
“As a group, the humility is there, but the mental resilience and mindset is still very much evolving. Whilst I have seen we are more than capable as individuals and a group, the consistency still alludes us and is the next part of our journey and learnings that we will look to achieve whilst not compromising all the foundations we need to have to be a consistent contender.”
The Eagles find themselves in a tough pool in Wellington. They are paired with England (5th place), France (6th), and the always dangerous Samoa (11th). The USA were defeated by both England and France in Dubai. They’ll need revenge in New Zealand to keep their Cup streak alive.
