Canadian star Jamie Cudmore will have surgery on a neck injury in the coming days, sidelining him for the next 3-4 months. The big second row suffered a herniated disc playing for Clermont Auvergne against Racing 92 on December 27 in Top 14 action. The news comes at a bad time for Clermont who are likely to be without Sébastien Vaha’amahina and Paul Jedrasiak for the Six Nations Championship as both were included by Guy Novès in the new French squad for the tournament.
It’s anticipated that Cudmore will return well before the end of the season, so fans can expect to see him again in Clermont colours. Less than a month ago it was announced that he would be leaving his long-time club in the summer, with a destination as yet unknown. Pro D2 leaders Lyon were an early favorite, while mid-table Aviva Premiership club Gloucester have been mentioned in recent days as having offered him a role as player-coach. Cudmore has not made any indication either way, but was in typically defiant mood regarding his prospects for a speedy return.
