Mario Sagario has extended his stay at Munster until the end of the season, it was confirmed today. The 29 year old joined the Irish province after prior professional experience in the French lower divisions. To date he has played three Pro 12 matches, facing Leinster, Edinburgh and the Dragons.
Sagario played for Uruguay at Rugby World Cup 2015, starting in all four matches. The extent of his importance to Los Teros was clear in the scrum as Uruguay suffered late in matches when Sagario had been replaced.
His move to Munster saw him joining Rodrigo Capó Ortega as the only two Uruguayan players contracted to elite clubs. Backs Felipe Berchesi and Agustín Ormeachea play in France’s second division, the Pro d2 and are arguably of the calibre to play in the Top 14. Also playing abroad is Gastón Mieres who is doing so for Coventry in England’s third division.
Capped 51 times by Uruguay Sagario is one of two players from South America on the Munster roster. The other is Lucas González Amorosino whose future in Ireland is expected to be determined shortly.
