DTH van der Merwe opened 2016 with a try for the Scarlets. The Canadian flier intercepted a Tom James pass to spoil a Cardiff Blues attack and run 65 metres untouched to score beside the posts. The score put the Western Welsh region in a strong position but the team ultimately was unable to win as the Cardiff Blues rebounded to win a thriller 29-27.
Despite losing the Scarlets retain first place in the Guinness Pro 12 standings. The Cardiff Blues are still off the pace sitting in 9th position but are now four points behind the 2015 champions, Glasgow and hold a six point lead over the 10th placed Zebre.
Next up for the Scarlets is a home fixture against former competition leaders Connacht on January 10. Should van der Merwe cross again he will become the top try scorer in the Guinness Pro 12 this season. Having scored five to date he is tied with Dries van Schalkwyk and Isa Nacewa.
