Argentine Clubs Come out on top in Punta del Este 7s

Built on solid defense Córdoba Athletic took out the honors in the 27th edition of the Punta del Este Sevens, Uruguay’s premier Rugby Sevens event. Played this past weekend in the resort town the Argentine club became the first from outside of Buenos Aires to be crowned Punta 7s champion.

Córdoba Athletic secured the title by knocking-over 2014 winners, Moby Dick in the Cup Final. It completed a solid but rocky campaign that had included a 19-7 win over Ceibos and a 14-7 loss against Moby Dick on day one.

On day two the Córdoba side saw off Santa Fé in tire Quarter Finals to advance the the final four where they would face local rivals La Tablada, who had proven to be one of the best teams in the tournament by defeating Uruguay on the opening day.

The Semi Final match-up saw Córdoba Athletic winning cleanly. The 15-0 result would then be repeated in the final as Moby Dick were defeated 22-12 by the new Punta del Este 7s champions.

Both Chile and Uruguay competed in the Cup Quarter Finals but were defeated by Argentine clubs and therefore played in the Plate Semi Finals. Their meeting at the Semi Final stage was won 22-12 by the home nation which resulted in Uruguay facing Buenos Aires club Pucará in the Plate Final.
