Australian Boss says Los Jaguares can win Super Rugby

Australian rugby boss, Bill Pulver says that Los Jaguares can win Super Rugby. The head of the ARU believes that Argentina’s Super Rugby franchise, that will debut in the competition in 2016, will be able to go all the way and be champions.

We’re nervous that Argentina can win the damn thing. They have a lot of their Test players in their Super Rugby team and they will be seriously competitive” said Pulver.

Former Waratahs captain and World Cup finalist with the Wallabies, Phil Waugh agrees with Pulver but believes that it will be very hard for the South Americans to find the required consistency. “They obviously beat the Springboks extremely well in Durban, but then lost at home the week after. For me, the big challenge is backing up week-to-week, obviously it’s a tough trip to South Africa, so they’ve got a few hurdles and headwinds that they’ve got to overcome.”

Waugh also believes a weapon in Argentina’s favor will not only be the strength in depth of the roster but potentially also the unknown. “When you face a Super Rugby team out of New Zealand you know what to expect. You play a South African team, you know what to expect. But this Argentinian team will be very different.”

The Argentine franchise will open their campaign away to the Cheetahs in South Africa on Friday February 26. Preparations are set to begin on January 04 at the Buenos Aires Cricket & Rugby Club.
